Paul Thomas Anderson’s ode to the carefree chaos of youth throws us into the intoxicating whirlwind of Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman), a 15-year-old hustler with a knack for self-invention, and Alana Kane (Alana Haim), a 25-year-old photographer’s assistant with a serious case of wanderlust (and maybe a touch of arrested development).  Their unconventional “relationship” is the loose thread that binds a tapestry of wacky misadventures, from slinging waterbeds with a maniacally enthusiastic salesman (played by the one and only Leonardo DiCaprio) to dodging oil-slicked streets during the Yom Kippur War reenactment (because, hey, the Valley in the 70s was a whole vibe).  Expect laugh-out-loud moments, Bradley Cooper as a hilariously intense Jon Peters, and a soundtrack that will have you yearning for the days of eight-track tapes and platform shoes.  Just remember, in the land of Licorice Pizza, first love is messy, ambition is a rollercoaster, and dental hygiene is…optional.
